WHY ENDORSEMENT?
Individuals who earn Endorsement for Culturally Sensitive, Relationship-Focused Practice Promoting Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health® have demonstrated completion of specialized education, work, in-service training and reflective supervision/consultation that leads to competency in the promotion and practice of infant and early childhood mental health. The purpose of Endorsement is to:
- Transform the ways in which professionals view, wonder, consider, understand and respond to pregnant women, infants, young children and families they serve.
- Support professionals who offer knowledgeable and skilled support to pregnant women, infants, young children and families.
- Enhance professionals’ ability to identify risks to the physical, emotional and relational health of infants and young children, and to respond appropriately.
- Help professionals develop the capacity to shift perspective, address personal biases, set boundaries and slow down, observe and listen.
- Invite professionals to experience feeling heard, validated and affirmed within the context of a reflective supervision/consultation relationship, for the work that they are doing with or on behalf of pregnant women, infants, young children and families.
Our nationally recognized Endorsement process is a career development pathway that honors professionals' specialized education, skills and work experiences through a credential designed to demonstrate proficiency in the field. Endorsement is open to current SCIMHA members of any discipline serving infants, young children and families interested in demonstrating expertise in infant and early childhood mental health.

In adopting Competency Guidelines for Endorsement for Culturally Sensitive, Relationship-Focused Practice Promoting Infant & Early Childhood Mental Health®, our state joins a swiftly growing movement to prioritize the need for increased resources and attention on the social and emotional needs of infants and young children. South Carolina is the 29th state and joins two countries in licensing use of the Competency Guidelines (MI-AIMH Copyright © 2017. With this, South Carolina also becomes part of the Alliance for the Advancement of Infant Mental Health. The Alliance was formed with the goal of ensuring consistency in professional standards across state lines, promoting the relational health of infants, young children and their families, supporting professionals who serve infants, young children and families through workforce development and shared resources for infant and early childhood mental health associations.
