Reflective supervision is characterized by active listening and thoughtful questioning by both the supervisor and the supervisee. The role of the supervisor is to help the supervisee to answer his or her own questions and to provide the support and knowledge necessary to guide decision making. Supervisors can also support staff's professional development by using supervisory meetings to support the acquisition of new knowledge.

Reflective supervision addresses program goals and outcomes along with family goals. It encourages staff and family wellbeing by promoting supervisor strategies to model positive, goal-oriented relationships. It also helps reduce burnout and turnover of staff and maintains the quality and impact of services.

Best Practice Guidelines for Reflective Supervision: These guidelines, developed by the Alliance for the Advancement of Infant Mental Health and Michigan Association for Infant Mental Health, emphasize the importance of reflective supervision/consultation for best practice and describe the knowledge, skills and practices that are critical to reflective supervision/consultation.

SOUTH CAROLINA INFANT MENTAL HEALTH ASSOCIATION OFFERS OPPORTUNITIES
FOR PROFESSIONALS TO ACCESS REFLECTIVE SUPERVISION THROUGH A VIRTUAL
PLATFORM WITH AN ENDORSED REFLECTIVE SUPERVISOR. ALL HOURS RECEIVED
THROUGH OUR PROGRAM WILL COUNT TOWARD THE HOURS REQUIRED TO EARN
ENDORSEMENT IN ALL CATEGORIES.

SCIMHA's Reflective Supervision Learning Collaborative (RSLC) is a 12-month process comprised of learning sessions, web-based reflection experiences and active implementation phases. Support is built in throughout the process. This program is designed for master's prepared supervisors within the infant/early childhood program space. Participants should be ready to implement reflective supervision within their programs and pursue IECMH Endorsement upon completion of the learning collaborative.

While it is helpful to have a basic knowledge of reflective supervision, no previous experience providing reflective supervision is necessary.

Supervisors in the following fields that would benefit from RSLC:

Child Welfare Programs

Early Care and Education

Early Intervention

Home Visiting

Professionals interested in participating in the learning collaborative but who do not possess a master's degree should emphasize experience, training and personal or professional insights that have led to your interest in participating in RSLC.

SCIMHA also offers group reflective supervision sessions. These two-hour sessions are open to professionals in the infant and early childhood mental health field who would like to connect with other professionals in South Carolina, learn and practice reflective listening.

SCIMHA recommends committing to a full-year in order to fully digest and practice the core components of reflective supervision. Committing to one year of group reflective supervision sessions also allows you to complete the hours needed for Endorsement.

Group reflective supervision is also available to agencies who may have multiple people who need reflective supervision.

Cost: $60/per session (each session is 2 hours)

Click on the button to the left to complete the group reflective supervision interest form. SCIMHA will periodically form groups as there are enough registrants. We will be in touch with you to let you know when we expect to have a group ready.

In certain circumstances, individual reflective supervision sessions may be offered. Individual reflective supervision is an opportunity to pause and find meaning in the work we do. By building a trusted relationship with the consultant, individuals are able to examine their thoughts, feelings and experiences that are evoked while working within the early childhood field.

Due to a limited number of spots, these sessions will be reserved for clinical professionals providing infant mental health treatment and who are pursuing Endorsement in the Mental Health Specialist or Mental Health Mentor-Clinical categories.

Cost: $75/hour or $150/session (each session is 2 hours)
