About Our Speaker: Adrienne Edwards, PhD

Dr. Adrienne Edwards is an assistant professor and program director of human development and family studies at Winthrop University. Additionally, she is a Certified Family Life Educator and one of nine women that serve South Carolina Infant Mental Association as members of the board. 

Edwards began her career as a mental health therapist at Greenville Mental Health Center before transitioning into higher education as an assistant professor of human development. After leaving the Palmetto State for a stint at University of Nevada at Reno, she returned home in 2018 to join the staff of her alma mater, Winthrop University. 

She holds a doctorate in Human Development with an emphasis on child and adolescent development, from Virginia Tech. Edwards also has a Master's of Education in Counseling and Development with an emphasis on community and agency counseling from Winthrop University and a B.A. in Psychology from Clemson. 

Edwards' research areas include African American child social development, families processes in families of color with young children, home visitor preparation and qualitative research methods. Her work has been published in numerous journals including: Child Welfare: Journal of Policy, Practice and Program; Journal of Child and Adolescent Behavior; Sex Roles: A Journal of Research; and Sage Research Methods Cases. 

She is the recipient of the Jessie Bernard Outstanding Contribution to Feminist Scholarship Paper Award, presented by the Feminism and Family Studies section of the National Council on Family Relations.
