Diverse literacy development within early childhood settings impacts the positive development of children's identity within social groups. Building strong family and community bonds through literature influences a child's mental health for future success.

2. Develop an action plan to increase the number of books in early childhood settings that support African American cultural identity.
About Our Speaker: Sherrie Dueno, M.Ed. ECMH-E®
Sherrie Dueno, M.Ed., joined the Division of Early Care and Education’s nationally recognized ABC Quality rating and improvement system. Her mission is to spread the awareness that quality early childhood experiences for children and families supports the child’s overall well-being and strengthens the family for future success and economic stability.
As a South Carolina Certified Trainer and Technical Assistance Provider, she has conducted interactive and experimental presentations at local, state and national conferences including instructor for college level coursework. Her expertise areas are core components of a high-quality early childhood education, creative strategies that supports child inquiry, early childhood business management, and social cultural context of child development.
Sherrie serves as a board member for the South Carolina Association for the Education of Young Children, Charter Member of the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.; and membership in the National Black Child Development Institute and the University of South Carolina Alumni Association.
As a member of the SCIMHA leadership cohort, Sherrie’s passion is to increase the number of individuals in South Carolina participating in Endorsement® process to support young children’s mental health and wellness of caregivers.
