Webinar Objectives: 

This presentation will address challenges to parenting while in recovery from opioid use disorder and present qualitative research findings to support the development of a prenatal parenting intervention for women in recovery. The presentation will cover how the interplay between addiction and the attachment system complicates parenting and caregiver-child relationships and current research on parenting challenges and interventions in this population. The presentation will also include qualitative research findings on women's experiences being pregnant and preparing to parent while in recovery and provide best practice recommendations for parenting interventions for women in recovery.

2. Participants will identify common challenges to parenting for women with opioid use disorder and in recovery.

About Our Speaker: Katherine Guyot-Harris, Ph.D.

Katherine Guyon-Harris is an assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in the Division of General Academic Pediatrics. She is a licensed clinical psychologist and serves as a clinician specializing in infant and early childhood mental health and relationship-based parenting interventions for children from birth to age five. 

Guyon-Harris earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Michigan State University and completed Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy of degrees at Eastern Michigan University. She was awarded the Graduate Dean's Award for Research Excellence for her master's thesis, which explored trajectories of pre- to postnatal maternal depression symptoms across the birth of a child and child social-emotional outcomes. For dissertation, she was awarded two foundation grants to examine prenatal predictors of disrupted parenting behavior at 12 months postpartum.

She completed a clinical internship at the Tulane University School of Medicine in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, specializing in infant and early childhood mental health. Guyon-Harris also completed a joint research and clinical postdoctoral fellowship at Tulane, further specializing in IECMH and earning hours for psychology licensure. Following postdoctoral studies at Tulane, Guyon-Harris completed a T32-funded postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics to gain further training in perinatal mental health and substance use in primary care settings.
