Description:

In today’s healthcare system, there exists a devastating reality: the unique hardships experienced by Black mothers. Across nations, communities, and socioeconomic sectors, Black Maternal Health has been impacted by racism in our healthcare system. Please join SCIMHA as we highlight these gaps, discuss options to decrease them, and learn about local and national advocacy efforts. During our time together, we will view the perspectives from the documentary “Black Motherhood Through the Lens,” and hear the personal challenges and triumphs experienced by Mother Barbara Jenkins and Infant Mental Health Professional, Queen-Ella Pringle.

Objectives:

  1. To raise awareness of issues impacting Black Maternal Health and Mortality and to highlight the disparities faced by Black women in terms of birthing options, medical care and treatment.

  2. To learn about strategies to decrease disparities in Black Maternal Health and ways to advocate for better birthing options for Black women.
